Aromatic Success: One-Day Workshop on Cultivation and Processing Concludes with Key Insights
A one-day workshop on aromatic plant cultivation and processing was held on December 11th, 2024, at the sub-center of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Farm Science Center) in Atkali, Taluka Biloli, District Nanded, managed by the Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal. The event was presided over by Mr. Pramod Deshmukh, Chairman of the Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal, and featured key resource persons such as Dr. Dnyanesha from the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Hyderabad, along with Mr. S. Ranjit Kumar, Mr. VVS Swami, Dr. Madhuri Rewanwar, and Professor Kapil Ingle.
The workshop primarily focused on the scientific cultivation and processing of aromatic plants like Palmarosa, Lemongrass, Citronella, and Tulsi, with special attention to the plants suited for the Marathwada region. Experts addressed key challenges faced by farmers, including low oil recovery, low crop productivity, mechanization issues, and the complexities of storing aromatic oils. They also discussed agreements with oil purchasing companies and the scientific operation of steam distillation units.
To further support farmers, Mr. Anand Kumar Mishra from Udyan Biometrics Bidar and Mr. Vijay Kadam from Tata Chemicals Limited Mumbai shared insights into their company's aromatic oil purchasing process and rates, reassuring farmers of the high demand for aromatic oils globally and domestically. Mr. Santosh Sarole, an experimental farmer from Shirur Tajband, District Latur, also shared his experiences with cultivating aromatic plants. The program concluded with a visit to the Krishi Vigyan Kendra’s oil production unit and aromatic plant demonstration farm. A total of 25 farmers from Nanded, Latur, and Parbhani districts, engaged in aromatic plant cultivation, attended the workshop.
